Kunming opens more metro lines
CHINA: Kunming opened 21 km of metro extensions on April 30. Phase 2 of Line 1 extends the route north from Xiaodongcun to Kunming railway station, adding five stations. The first phase of Line 2 runs north from the main railway station to North Coach Station with 14 stations, although Kunming North is yet to open.
The two lines are operating as one, with through running of services from North Coach Station on Line 2 to University Town South on Line 1; this arrangement will obtain until the two lines are extended.
Most of the 300bn yuan costs for the newly opened extensions are covered by loans from China Development Bank.
The first phase of Line 1 opened in May 2013. It is operated with a fleet of Type B trains supplied by CSR Zhuzhou.
